The stone bridges of Grevena are the largest and most
impressive in Macedonia.
In 1995, following pressure by the Prefecture
of Grevena, the
prefecture's bridges were declared listed monuments by the 11th
Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities of Veria. In general terms their style is
similar.
The bridge under Nidrouzi Mountain,
between the villages of Alatopetra and Prosvoro, is the only exception. This
bridge consists of perfectly chiselled and set stones of significant size. The bridge of Aziz Aga, which was built in 1727 and is
70 m.
long and 15 m.
high is renowned for the size of its arch (the biggest in Macedonia).
Spanos bridge, which connected Epirus
with Macedonia,
was important for communication purposes.
It is the prefecture's largest bridge with 84 m. in length and 10 m. in height. An impressive
bridge that attracts a multitude of visitors every year is the bridge of Portitsa, which is built at the foot of
the gorge outside the village
of Spilaio. The double
arch bridge of Ziakas, next to the new bridge that
leads to the homonymous village, was built at the end of the 19th
century on Velonias
River. The Kagelia
bridge, next to road connecting Trikomo with Monachiti, is difficult to access,
particularly in autumn and winter.
The bridge
of Pramoritsa, which is 42 m. long, stands out on
account of its location. The prefecture's only bridge to be built inside a
village can be found at Dotsiko. Situated between the villages of Kastro and
Megaro, the single arch bridge
of Kastro is stands above
Grevenitis River and forms a perfect semicircle
that reaches 8 m.
in height.
Another seven smaller and newer bridges can be found
in the prefecture, in addition to the half-ruined bridge of Pasha,
which had the same fate as the bridge
of Arta. The bridge was
demolished in 1941 by the English in order to stem the course of the German
army.
